What is Waterproofing ?
Roofs are exposed every day to hazardous conditions and can be damaged and deteriorated over time. It is the most critical area of a building or structure which protects the users and interior from these hazards, and must be well-selected, well-designed and well-installed to be long-lasting without fail.
Waterproofing is the process of making an object or structure waterproof or water-resistant, so that it remains relatively unaffected by water or resisting the ingress of water under specified conditions.
What are the advantages of Waterproofing ?
Longevity: Waterproofing reduces the risk of critical damage. With a waterproof membrane protecting your roof, youโll have an additional layer of protection from wear, decay, and leaks caused by rain, snow, ice, and wind. At the same time, a waterproof membrane reflects sunlight, reducing the impact of extreme heat and light on your roof. Our waterproofing solutions can last up to ten years, substantially extending the lifetime of your existing roof.
Cost Savings: Beyond reducing wear and tear, a waterproof membrane for your roof saves you money in the short-term because it is significantly cheaper than a complete roof overhaul. Youโll also save money because roof repairs wonโt be required as frequently, and maintenance costs will be lower. By extending the life of your existing roof, youโll also experience significant cost-savings in the long run.
Energy Savings: Surpasses reflectivity requirements for the Energy Star label, while maximizing quicker heat emissivity and dissipation.Because waterproof membranes reflect heat and sunlight, youโll save on HVAC costs in the summer by maintaining steadier building temperatures. Some waterproofing solutions may even qualify you for additional rebate and warranty programs.
Lower Humidity: A waterproof roof coating seals your building from water leakage. Waterproofing reduces the humidity levels in your building while also preventing the growth of mold. You, your employees, and your clients will all be more comfortable, and youโll be protected from more serious structural issues in the future.
Maintenance Savings: Reduces thermal shock damage: remains watertight over many substrates. A waterproof coating is much simpler to maintain and repair than your existing roof infrastructure. When maintenance and repairs are necessary, they are generally much quicker to perform than on a conventional roof alone. The majority of repairs will simply have to be made to the waterproof coating rather than the roof itself.
Renewable Warranty: The durability of our waterproof protection is sustainable and guaranteed — in writing — for labor and materials.

Lucas
R.M. Lucas Company was founded by Robert M. Lucas in 1912. R. M. Lucas Co. offers a full line of coatings and mastics for the professional building contractor. We offer everything from time-proven high quality bituminous coatings and mastics to technologically advanced polymer based sealants, adhesives and reflective elastomeric coatings.
Solvent, water-based and moisture cure coatings each have their advantages.
Solvent based tend to be more waterproof, can be used in colder weather, wonโt freeze, are less affected by humidity and rain after application and will adhere to certain surfaces, such as TPO, that water-based coatings often will not.
Water based coatings are lower odor, are โbreathableโ so are more suitable for masonry, are less prone to โbleed throughโ or discoloration when applied over asphalt and are generally easier to spray as they donโt change viscosity significantly at different temperatures
Moisture cure coatings allow solids of up to 100% so the film thickness per applied volume is greater. They are generally low odor and low VOC. The tradeoffs are shorter shelf life and limited adhesion to some surfaces including TPO and asphalt that require primers. While they wont freeze, moisture cure coatings will not cure normally when temperatures are below freezing and there is little free moisture in the air.
